Condition Examination

Condition examinations determine the current state of an object or collection, if it is safe to be transported, if interventive or preventative measures are needed to counteract deterioration, if there are risks inherent to the object or materials, and other information.

Documentation

Comprehensive documentation includes photography, a Condition Report explaining the state of an object or collection, and a Treatment Proposal detailing the recommended treatment approach and specific interventive and preventive measures.

Treatment & Stabilization

Treatment can include cleaning, reconstruction of fragments, filling losses, retouching the surface to restore aesthetic cohesion, and more. In larger collections there may only be a need for minimal intervention to stabilize objects.

Collections Care & Preventive Conservation

Advice and support with proper handling and storage, environmental monitoring and emergency preparedness.

Exhibitions & Loan Preparations

Preparing objects for exhibitions and loans includes documentation maintenance, database entry, minor conservation treatments, and safe packing and display recommendations.

Conservation Lab Organization & Safety Support

Drawing on experience reorganizing conservation lab spaces, I offer support for institutions, studios, and collections-based businesses seeking to improve the organization, safety, and usability of their workspaces, which may include:

- Chemical, equipment, and supply inventories

- Lab and storage area organization, including improved labeling and storage systems

- Identification of materials for retention, donation, or disposal

- Support with SDS organization and safety documentation

- Coordination within institutional procedures for chemical handling and waste disposal

Particular attention is given to SDS information, ventilation needs, PPE, solvent storage, hazardous material management, and compliance with existing institutional safety procedures.

Treatment Project

Outside of the services I provide for institutions, I'm happy to offer a popular treatment-based project package for the private client with damaged artwork. See below for details.

Process

Consultation

Get in touch to schedule an in-person, phone, or email consultation, to briefly assess the object and discuss expectations.*

Intake

1. Both parties sign the Intake Services Agreement**

2. Object is transported to the Studio

3. Conservator performs Condition Examination and provides Treatment Proposal

Intervention

The agreed treatment will then be carried out, with communication about progress.

Invoice

Upon completion of the project you will receive a treatment report and an invoice to be paid within a set amount of time.

Delivery / Pick-up

Once the invoice is paid we will discuss and arrange return transport for the object.

*The consultation will result in a preliminary estimate for intake and treatment services. The consultation fee will be discounted from the final invoice. If the Client does not continue services, the consultation fee is due up front.

**The Intake Services Agreement indicates hourly rate and estimated duration of Intake Services. Agreements are subject to change if further examination reveals additional concerns; however, any necessary revisions will always be discussed clearly and transparently with the client before proceeding.
